What is KLS?

Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS), also known as Sleeping Beauty Syndrome, is a rare neurological disorder which mainly occurs in adolescent years. This disorder is difficult to diagnose and affects roughly 1000 known patients worldwide. KLS is episodic which means the patient alternates between sick and healthy states. When a patient is in an episode, it can last days, weeks or even months in some cases. During an episode, the sufferer is in a dream-like state with excessive amounts of sleep and a change in behaviour. When healthy, the patient does not show any characteristics of this disorder and may not remember what occurred while they were sick.
